Dr. Daniel Samo is a board-certified emergency physician at Northwestern Hospital who has been practicing occupational medicine for 33 years. In his profession, he takes care of people at work including respiratory and mask issues.
Businesses are re-opening, but Covid-19 is still here. Dr. Samo uses his experience in the medical profession to offer advice and precaution as individuals reenter the public. Dr. Samo has a simple message, the quickest way to reduce the spread of the virus is face coverings, meaning Anyone Not Wearing A Face Covering Is A Danger To You!
How Does Covid-19 Spread?
The most common reason is respiratory. Droplets in the air spread the virus via talking, singing, coughing, or sneezing. The droplets in the air enter through your nose, mouth, or eyes, making you sick. The droplets settle on the surface, where the virus can survive for some time, putting people at risk by touching that surface and then touching their nose, mouth, eyes, and leading to infection. There are two ways we can take precaution:
- Preventing droplets from a cough, sneeze or talking getting into the air
- Barrier Mask – i.e., Surgical mask, trap droplets from getting into the air, helping to stop the spread; however they don’t necessarily prevent you from contracting infection due to openings in the sides of the mask.
- Filtering the air you breathe through a mask to prevent droplets from getting in your mask
- Filtering or Respirator Mask – N95 and KN95 masks are tightly fitted to your face creating a seal, and as you breathe through, the virus gets trapped in a barrier created by the material.
Wearing a mask can tremendously reduce the spread of this virus, and depending on the mask prevent you from contracting virus.
